Default Grease Fittings

My 31 "A" has the old style straight grease fittings with no hex on them for removing. With no hex, how do I remove them? Are they threaded in or just pressed in?

I use a real good small pair of channel locks it grips them good
Grab them at the base but leave a little space so you don't mar the surface of the part
Just changed all mine out after having everything powdercoated and didn't make a scratch on anything.

How to remove? Remove carefully.

Use a small cold chisel & a small hammer. (And/or a pair of pliers or better yet, a Farrier Nipper used to trim horse hooves -- everybody had farrier nippers in the 1930's).

Place the cold chisel point at the joint between the grease fitting & the adjacent steel surface & tap lightly on all sides to try to wedge the chisel point between the fitting & adjacent surface; i.e., to widen the distance between these two surfaces.

After the fitting moves slightly, about 1/16", place chisel at slight angle to drive fitting out of hole.

One can try rotating the fitting with a pliers & pulling outwards also.

Others may have other methods.

If you don't plan to reuse them, Vise Grips, twist and wobble them out.

After the original fittings are out, do the holes need to be tapped for the modern fittings ?

I think the Model A parts house have both the screw in and the drive in fittings in modern style.

Good time to ask! (I hope) Do most restorers pro or amateur replace the original fittings with the modern fittings. Sorry to hi-jack your thread but it seem like a good opportunity. Richard/Ca

I re-install new drive in fittings after removal of old ones & cleaning openings.

Best to get special drive-in tool to drive them in -- works great.

I was wondering this too. I understand how the origional straight style sealed with the greasegun but i dont understand how the origional 45* style sealed... its just a hex cap with a straight small tube sticking out thats supposed to go on the grease gun.

I like the original fittings and use my original tool kit grease gun as well as a modern gun with the special adaptor. They both work great and seal without loss of grease better than the modern fittings.

If you get the press in style spend the few extra bucks for the tool to bang them in. Another lesson learned the hard way, seems to be my motto!

Hi all. It seems the right people are on this thread so I'll add my question to the fray.
I'm about to replace my spring shackles on my '29 and I have to choose grease fitting type. The whole car has the old style. Is there any advantage or reason to go with the modern style or should I keep things consistent?

No, keep the original fittings.
I find original fittings never leak grease to the side, like the modern fittings sometimes do. Beside that, they are the ones that belong on the car.

Just be sure they are clean and the grease actually goes through them. Old hard grease, dirt and paint could have closed them up.

if your not using the original style grease gun, get the little adapter the jobbers sell to go on the modern gun works good.
