Default Thermostat question

I have a 58 223 6 cylinder motor. I'm unsure how the thermostat goes in. Does the largest part go into the engine block, or the opposite? I drove it around the block and the radiator seemed to be very hot upon my return so that me wonder if I put it in correctly.

Thanks, Chuck

The large part goes into the intake manifold.

Yes, the coil spring goes toward the heat. It expands and opens the valve.

Thanks for the information. At least I put it in correctly.
