Is there any way to distinguish a 1928 cowl form a 1929?
Thanks. |

An early 28 will have a slot on the lhs to allow the hand brake lever to pass through. The slot was not required when the lever was moved to the gearbox.

The flange that holds the hood welting for the earlier 28's was also different.
If the gas tank is still with the cowl, you might read the date stamped into it. It's on the driver's side just above the lip with the mounting bolts. |

The very early 28 Cowl, in addition to the cowl welting mentioned by Tom, also use different hood sills to match the cowl; the date stamp on the gas tank did not start until around May 1928; the hole for the starter rod is in a different position to accomodate the off set starter rod, later the hole was moved as the second generation starter rod was made straight. When the brake handle was moved to the front of the gear shift the first early cowls had a plate using screws to hold it in place to cover the hole for the left hand brake, later the plate was rivited in place; when the old cowls were used up the new cowls elimanted this hole.

I have to post some photos of the two cowls that I have. I haven't been able to find a date stamp of the Roadster cowl and I haven't gotten the Tudor apart yet.

Here is a shot of my Tudor. Is it possible to determine the year from this photo?

On the Roadster cowl look between the left two tas tank lip mounting holes and about 1 inch up from the seam. There is a date stamped there and it looks like the month is 11, but I can't quite make out the other numbers. So, it must be a late 28 or late 29 Roadster cowl. Look at the other gas tank for the date and let us know.

The Roadster cowl is clearly stamped "10 10 rust". I'm not sure if there's anything stamped after the tens or not, but if there is, it looks more like an 8 than a nine.
![]() I can't see anything stamped on the Tudor cowl. ![]() |
