axle bump stop removal
I'm trying to get front axle bump stops off the frame of my 47 coupe. Is there an easy way to get them off

Re: axle bump stop removal
Aren't they just bolted on? I think there is a nut inside the frame rail, take it off and the stop will be removable. I am going out to one of my shops shortly and I will look.

Re: axle bump stop removal
There may be a bolt and nut that hold it to frame.

Re: axle bump stop removal
I'm taking about the cone shaped bump stops in the front. It's kind of hard to tell by it looks like there is a nut attracted to the inside of the frame

Buy new ones and the mounting method will become apparent.

Re: axle bump stop removal
Yeah, the bump stop has a 3/8 fine thread sticking up, with a spring washer and a 9/16" af nut on it. Hold the bumpstop (It might be scalloped away to clear/locate on a rivet head) to stop it turning and undo the nut on top, inside the channel of the frame.
It shouldn't be too much of a headscratcher. A liberal dose of the penetrating medium of your choice prior to attempting nut removal might be a good idea. Mart. |

Re: axle bump stop removal
Some of the early Fords have the axle stop mounted on a hollow metal base. The metal base rests against the frame and has a notch cut in the metal base so that it "clears" the rivet that is in the frame thereby allowing the metal base to sit squarely on the frame.. My 40 Ford has that. I do not think you have that style axle bumper. It's nothing to worry about. Bob Drake shows he has axle bumper for your car here:

Re: axle bump stop removal
So i managed to get one off with a channel lock pliers, but the other one wouldn't budge so i hosed it down with some PB blaster, and welded a steel bar to it slid a piece of pipe over that and finally was able to wrench it off.
