Default How to remove a 1932 Transmission

I just purchased a 1932 V8 4 Door Deluxe a couple of months ago, so I'm very new to this "scene". I have some issues with the clutch. It chatters greatly. Because I like to take the path of least resistance, I really don't want to remove the engine and all its plumbing. I'd really like to "drop" the transmission. Prior to the 1932 and after the 1932, there are forum suggestions that the transmission, along with the rear axle can be moved backwards to get to the clutch. Why is it that the 1932 transmission can't be removed in the similar way ? Please be gentle. This my FIRST Question

32 trans can not be removed because the rear mount is to the vertical face of the K member/cross member. So, the motor and trans as a unit has to come out. Crawl underneath and have a look, it will be obvious

I must applaud you for doing some research before asking the question. You are correct, Model A's have enough room to slide the trans rearward enough to remove the trans, and in 33 Ford made an X member, instead of the K member in the 32's, where the trans lays in a saddle so it can be slid rearward too. Happy motoring, have we seen the car? , sorry I loose track some times.

As noted, the only viable way is to remove the engine . . . and I always leave the transmission attached when I do. You'll find that once you get the hood and radiator out, that the job isn't too bad - will probably only take a few hours from that point forward.

Something to look at is whether or not your engine has the "stabilizer/steady rods" that go from the back of the block to the frame. When missing these should not really cause clutch chatter, though they do help to keep the engine (front-to-back) where it needs to be when you put the clutch in. Some folks claim they influence clutch chatter . . . worth at least looking at.

1932 Ford Chassis showing bare K Member. This is why you have to remove the Engine on 1932 Fords to remove the Gear Box.

Just a question here, does your car have the steady rods on it.....IF those are absent that "could" cause clutch chatter too. I hate to see you pull the engine and trans IF those are missing???

mercman,

It's not the legs on the center cross member that prevent fore and aft movement, but rather the engine steady rods that attach to the center cross member and engine bell housing that do that as B&S has noted.

Your photos are helpful in that they do demonstrate clearly why the transmission cannot be moved rearward to remove it.
