Default Fuel gauge isn’t correct

Hey guys,

My fuel gauge has never been correct. I had the original sender in it and changed it with a new one. The new one though had the wire that goes to the gauge and to a ground (I think electrical isn’t my strong suit) I hooked up the new sender and it varies on full and half full and so on, in the morning it will say full then when I go home from work it will say half full but on the way home it will jump back to full. I disconnected the ground wire to chassis ground, to make it a one wire sender like the original, and it varies also. Any ideas on what could be going on? It’s a 53 mercury I have. Again electrical is not my strongest

Thanks in advance

Hopefully, you kept the original (King-Seeley) sending unit? The "new ones" are not compatible with the gauge in your Merc...

I don’t think I do have it but that one was way off also, when I had a full tank it only went to half a tank, it never went to full
