Default Ford F1 T87D-1 transmission.

I've got this tranny in an F1 that I'm building. When I pulled the drain plug about a half a cup of rusty kerosene poured out. I used an magnet and there were no metal particles in the goop.

Is this the 'heavy duty' tranny?

How much fluid does this tranny take? Not finding much info on this particular tranny.

Thanks!

This is one rugged trans. As JWL states, the gears are tough. If you plan to drive the truck and don't know much about its history, I would consider pulling it to go thru the bearings, thrust washers, synchros, etc. we have all that if you decide on this.

The fluid should come up to the bottom of that plug in your first picture.

My 48 F1 has one. I only changed the fluid when I rebuilt the truck and it became my daily driver. Thrashed on it for 10 years, figuring to swap it for a T5 when it died. It won't die!

It's the HD trans with synchro'd 2nd and 3rd gears - not bad to run, just shift it slower.

I sought out and bought one of those trannies when I was building my truck. I got lucky that it was in good shape. I used Brad Penn gear oil specially formulated for the brass parts. I believe it takes 4 quarts.
