6V Starter & Alternator
I am restoring a ‘51 F-1 with the V8. The owner wants to stay with the 6 Volt Pos. Ground. I would like to find the best starter I can; Hi torque? Gear reduction? Much prefer US made but these days???? I know that some vendors are selling Hi Torque starters made in India, does anybody have experience with those (good or bad)? Also would like to get an alternator that is in a stock appearing generator case. To be honest, I am much more familiar with the Model A stuff and I know that these 2 items are available for those but I don’t know about the flathead. Suggestions?

Re: 6V Starter & Alternator
I had starters and 2 generators for my '36 rebuilt. New brushes, bushings etc and maybe even rewound them, I dont remember. Good as new! Now I have spares but probably wont need them for quite a while if ever.

Re: 6V Starter & Alternator
Jeepguy, try getting your starter rebuilt, there is an outstanding shop in Fullerton Orange County, California. Rebuilt my 49 and what a huge difference!!
Powermaster: https://www.summitracing.com/search?...head%20starter See if you can get yours rebuilt locally, if you want, PM and I will send you the address of the shop I used.

Re: 6V Starter & Alternator
I believe someone makes 6v field coils that give the starter more power.

Re: 6V Starter & Alternator
I have rebuilt a lot of them using 6 volt high torque coils, works very well, assuming everything else is right. They are readily available & any shop can put them in fit you

Re: 6V Starter & Alternator
Any tricks for getting the square-drive bolts out? I've seen some heavy duty fixtures that were available just to tackle this job.
