Steering column grease zerk
I have three 7 tooth steering columns. Two have a grease zerks on the housing where the sector fits in and one doesn't have a zerk there. Does anyone know if certain years had them and other didn't, i.e. 28 or 29. I am posting pictures of the columns. I can't see why a zerk would be needed if 600W oil was used as it would seem to lub the sector well without a zerk.

Re: Steering column grease zerk
Zerks were used on the early cars. Apparently they pumped 600 through them. Due to public confusion about what to put in there, the zerk for the worm and sector teeth was later changed to a plug. A small shot of heavy grease in the sector shaft zerk might help seal it against leakage of 600. Be careful not to over grease so you do not get grease up in the worm gear.

Patrick?......
Rusty...there was no grease fitting on the early 7-tooth steering columns as shown in the area of the sector shaft. That zerk was added in September 1928. Pluck |

Re: Steering column grease zerk
Thanks Pat and Steve. I knew someone would know what the deal is. I knew some housings were welded and some weren't, but I didn't know about the zerks.

Re: Steering column grease zerk
It was common way back when for shops to have a good grease gun loaded with really heavy oil, 600W I guess..

I'm assuming that grease can be pumped into the 2nd grease fitting on the sector shaft?? Correct?

Re: Steering column grease zerk
Sometimes a grease zerk was the only thing available with a pipe thread. Plugs were easy to lose,
