I took my intake and exhaust manifolds off, and also my valve cover doing some cleaning on my engine block while I had the front end off and noticed that the block appears chipped / cracked around the exhaust valve guide. Can anyone tell me if this is common, or if it needs to be repaired, or can be repaired? Just how serious is this?

That chipped off section of boss in front of the guide is not a problem, I've seen many and it happens hammering guides in and out. If you have peripheral radiating cracks that penetrate that may be a problem. Since the weak front edge of the boss is the only visible chipped area, I doubt there are more cracks. Not easy to see unless you clean off the carbon and use a penetrating dye. Don't obsess, if it runs well drive it.
