I caught my timing gear just in time. The engine developed a rumble, so I pulled the side timing cover off, and by luck, the chipped tooth was lined up so I could see it. Replaced it with an aluminium one and a new crank gear.

Does the aluminum gear make any noise? I've read that some do and some don't.

Noise from a metal timing gear depends on how they fit. There should be .003-4 clearance with the crank gear. After who knows how many babbitt jobs, normal wear and tear, etc , the crankshaft may not be exactly centered and the fit with the cam gear is off. Dan McEachern makes both over and undersized gears so you can get a proper fit.

On mine I was getting an intermittent clank when idling. It would increase as it warmed up. Mine was a fiber gear, and when he showed it to me the bolt holes were worn like a good and plenties. He replaced it with an aluminum from Snyders. I haven't noticed a significant increase in noise although it is the winter season in Upstate NY. The times I have let it run to warm up I didn't notice it any louder than in the past. Good catch on identifying and replacing before something more catastrophic happened!
