Default Head stud height

Does anyone know where there is a table or document that shows the installed height of the short, long (water outlet) and distributor cable retainer (3 different heights) studs? I suspect some block holes are slightly deeper than others, so just bottoming out the studs in the block might not be best for a uniform height. Bratton's catalog says the studs should stick up 1/32" above the nuts, but not what height the installed studs should be before installing the head.

Les Andrews Mechanics Handbook, Volume 1, page 1-149 says:
Quote:
All studs except # 8, 11, & 13 should extend 2-3/4" above the block. The two front studs (#11 & 13) for the water outlet casting should extend 5" above the block. The #8 stud (for the ignition cable hold down bracket) should extend 2-29/32" above the block.
I just use a common tri-square to set the heights.

JS indicates that the studs should be one thread above the nut. I do lots of motors and this is hard to achieve especially when using a high compression head. Stock heads usually will seat correctly by Les' method if they haven't been resurfaced too much. For HC heads I would add 1/32-1/16" to compensate for the added thickness or measure a stock head at one of the holes and compare with a HC head at the same hole and add the difference to les' numbers.

James, you might correct me if I am wrong. The studs do not bottom out in the hole - as in hit touch the bottom of the hole. The coarse threads bottom out at the surface of the deck - as in the threads can go no deeper than the length of the coarse threads. There should be several thousands inch clearance between bottom of the stud and bottom of the hole.Using a micrometer stick some of the holes in my engine were 3/16" deeper than the length of the stud. ken

Thanks, guys for the input. I never noticed the dimensions in Les' book, which I do have.
