Default dirty model a horn

I have a model a horn that came with a basket case car I purchased. It is missing the rear cover over the motor. It looks like it was used for a long time that way. The car was in storage over 30 years. The entire motor area is covered with the same type of caked on dirt and oil as an old worn out 4 banger. It just has a lighter coat. It has a short loose wire coming from each coil. I cleaned the commutator hooked jumper wires to battery and it works. My question is how and what would I use to clean it?

Need a picture to see what it looks like, but I'd use something like a popsicle stick to removed any caked on dirt, then spray it down with WD-40 and blow it with compressed air. Use more WD-40 and a toothbrush if you need to.

I think I would use some brake clean or electronic cleaner in a spray can , followed by gentle blast of compressed air, use some fine crocus cloth on the commutator. Use a round end of a tooth pic to clean between the commutator segments.

You should only use a cleaner that is suited for cleaning an electric motor. You do not want to remove the protective coating on the motor windings!!

If you don't have time to do it right the 1st time, how do you have time to do it the 2nd time?

yup - auto parts stores have electrical contact cleaner (NOT the same as contact cleaner - stuff eats some plastics)

any industrial supply should have the electric motor cleaner as well.

once its clean back off the adjusting screw so the motor just free spins and let it spin for awhile to get broken back in.
