Default Gas starved? compression? vacuum leak?

6 months ago I took an around the block test.

Started 2nd or 3rd crank.
Seemed to idle ok.

Took off down the street, and first acceleration got a couple loud backfires, then then ok.
Drove 1 block, saw school bus unloading, so shut engine off, 4 minutes later, started up first crank, no backfire.

Drove the 1 block back to house, engine very hot, spitting water everywhere, carburetor spitting some gas out.
After this could not get started, no matter what my mentor and I tried.

Only thing that started it once, and only once, was by pulling and holding choke out when cranking 5 or 6 times.
Hasn't started again since.

cylinders are all below 35-40, installed new head gasket.
Anybody with suggestions? (silly question)

Thanks

Back to basics. Start by checking for a hot blue spark that will jump 1/4", then check the timing, and gas flow at the carb. Your engine should run with low compression, but that could be sticking or burned valves, or excess carbon, or a bad head gasket.

In the meantime take a break and watch this short video on having final fun with your junk cars and pickups.

Reply no. 2 possible failure suggestion is very logical with your no start details thus far mentioned ..... quick check for stripped teeth on a timing gear would be to rotate engine and verify that your distributor is rotating.

Just keep giving details and keep asking ...... this Forum is loaded with compassionate gentlemen trying to assist others.

Checked timing gear, with several revolutions of the hand crank, distributor turning fine. other priorities keeping me away from trying more suggestions, will keep at it.
