There is so much talent on this site that i just have to ask. Many old cars had gas gauges that were electric an incooperated a wire wound resister in the tank with a wiper arm that rose and fell with the float.. I have this on my 31 willys knight but the resister is physically destroyed and i need to try to wind a new one. Does anyone know where to find this type of wire which i believe is nicrome. Jack

I have bought plenty of it on Ebay. You need to know the size you require.

Measure the ohms of your old sender, even if you have to measure several pieces of wire and add them together. I used to keep a 0-100 ohm variable resistor in my tool box to use for testing gas gauges. Most tank units were about 90 ohms.

Thanks for the reply guys. Tom, I am looking at about 160 ohms. and I don't know the way to measure the wire for size. Its fairly thin, I would guess in the mid 20's in gauge or low 30's. Again thanks, Jack

The chart will give you the ohms per foot for each wire size. |
