Some Old License Plates

I was going through some boxes in my mother-in-law's garage last weekend and came across a box of old plates that my father-in-law had saved over the years, apparently a lot of years....not sure what I'm going to do with them.

In my state you can register a YOM tag as long as the number is not used. My 30 has a 1930 tag on it. Sell them to fellow A'ers.

If you do not need them trade for parts or sell them here or ebay .

Check them out on EBAY. Some may be worth more than you think. There is a premium for pairs since most states have YOM registration programs. I assume, but don't know for a fact, that collectors put a premium on pairs.

Compared to some I've seen, your plates are in exceptionally good condition. As Charlie says, pairs are premium. Suggest you research the market to get all they are worth. Good luck.

you could line the rafters in your garage attic with them....use them as a frame around the garage door oh the possibilities are endless.....

Take them to the Crab Shack in Surf City, North Carolina. I took a 1928 Ohio plate to them last spring and they were tickled. They have a lot of license plates hanging but none as old as the '28. You may get a meal which is worth it at twice the price.

what i did with some (only some...got an orange crate stuffed with more) that were on my grandparents farm. they are all IL plates from 1956-1991 and they are all pairs...

tried to make it look like a 1950's or so billboard, lights are dimmable on the knob to the right and an outlet just because.

decided to make it a tad more festival for the holidays

They make excellent shingles for roofs. There were a couple of barnes shingled with license plates (actually they were obsolete new unissued plates from the DMV) in 1932 and 1934 that I know about. The person that dismantled the barns was came out very well on the deal. You could always tell where the plates came from when you saw them at swap meets since they were all prefect except a couple of additional holes for nails. Most of the time they were in matched sets since that is they way they came from the DMV.

I have a 1930 plate I would like to put on the front of my car. But to put it to the light bar....well it is so big. Are there any brackets sold to mount to the front bumper or another place, rather than covering the radiator?

200 for a pair of real good plates isn't unheard of. I paid close to that for a pair of 29 Oregon plates a couple of years ago.

I single florida plate for the Model A years, go for that $200.00 easy.

Rarity is by state of issue. Many states are quite rare with a few being nearly impossible to collect. Matched pairs definitely bring a good premium and if they are in excellent original condition - name your price. Your Ohio plates are original and in exceptional condition, I would encourage you to do your research prior to making any decisions with your "hoard!"

Just to the rear of the bumper beneath the horn, I found a bolt which fastens the fender to the frame. Bent and twisted a short piece of flat stock approx. 1/8 x 3/4 so when it was fastened with said bolt it stood vertical. To it, welded a transverse length on which to bolt the plate, painted it, installed it --- plate sits back from the bumper out of the way under the horn:- looks like its always been there. (copied idea from an A that I saw at a cruise-in)

Te regestry gave me a hard time when I tried to use these plates.

They finaly gave in for which I am greatfull.

I have seen where they put a small S hook in each mounting hole, then add a small chain, like furnace chain to each S hook, hook the next plate by S hook etc. until they all hang down under each other. Organize by dates. Don't take a lot of room and are a good conversation piece.

The value of your Ohio plates depends mainly on the Year of Manufacture regulations of Ohio. Plate collectors look for plates in their original paint, and legible, so condition is everything to a plate collector.. On the other hand if they can be repainted and legally used for antique car registration under the Year of Manufacture regulations of Ohio that is where your best $$$ value would come from. The international club of license plate collectors is alpha.org but do not expect to find appraisal information on this site. (Automobile License Plate Collectors Association). Collectors grade plates as Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Mint, with sub category that might apply to some of these plates as nrp (needs repaint). The last appraisal guide was published in 2009 although a new price guide is expected to be available in 2016.
