does the shifting forks or gears hold the 2nd gear in place

If the gear is too loose on the shaft, or bearings worn, or the flywheel housing not correctly dialed in, the gear can "walk" out of engagement.

If it's popping out of gear it may also be due to worn shift forks and all the wear parts in the shift tower.
