New timing gear
Put a new aluminum timing gear, with a a new crank gear. Backlash is excessive at .008-.010 and there is noise. Is there any cause for this besides bad gears(which I kinda doubt)? I know nothing of the engine's past. Do I need to get an oversize fiber gear?

Re: New timing gear
One of the reasons for a fiber timing gear was to reduce noise.

Re: New timing gear
The crankshaft is in the wrong place and too far away from the camshaft.
On a rebuilt engine, the centerline of the line boring machine is located on the bottom plane of the cylinder block and spaced from the camshaft bores. With too much cam gear clearance, the crankshaft is closer to the starter motor than it should be. You may have other issues since the crankshaft and transmission centerlines are offset. |

The main caps have chisel marks, 1 for 1 and 2 for 2. The nuts on the bearing caps are a self locking type, not castle and cotter type. The rear main has a 5/16" OD drain tube, with 1 1/8" bosses. The car is a late 31 indented firewall. The engine serial number is gone, or so obscured with paint I can't read it. I'm assuming it's been rebuilt? I'm not even sure it's original to the car. Where does one procure an oversize aluminum gear? |

Re: New timing gear
Is there anything more detrimental besides the noise to running the small gear? Shock loading the cam? Aluminum wear in the oil?
