deuce has got it....the rear thrust face being chewed is a heart breaker on 78 series cases. I have repaired a few for guys who absolutely required the trans their car was
born with.....not cheap....

I recently purchased a " '39 trans " with Genuine Lincoln gears including the 81A double detent tower and stick for $120. The seller would not guarantee all the components were in good...
