Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Love it! Gary, you are a thinker. You constantly invent ways to get the job done with whatever you have on hand, and it's with impressive results. Well done. :):)

Re: oil filters
fordor41, the bypass on a filter opens at 20# (or whatever the designed rating is) DIFFERENCE in pressure between the inlet and outlet side of the filter, not the oil pressure the pump is delivering....

Re: Rebuilt flathead tight - too tight?
Fortyone, are you using only jumper leads from a battery to crank the engine? If so, hook up the actual battery cables and it'll crank far better. 45 ft/lbs is tight but not extreme as some rope type...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I painted mine Kubota blue. Here's the thread where I recut domes in EAB heads that had been milled and hit pistons.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Gary, this is stuff that takes years to learn, and in my case, a lot of good information and research by folks who were nice enough to publish their work so we can benefit from it. It's interesting...

Re: Nice forty Ford
My '41 Merc had the HD air cleaner on it when I bought it 5 yrs ago. It's big indeed!

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
GB, the EAC heads look like they'll fix the problem (never would have expected that problem!). The EAC's do have a bit less compression but you'll be just fine...you're not building a racer. Good job...

Re: HEI distributor
[QUOTE=KULTULZ;2311129]:eek:
Not even a CHI-CON SLOPPY COPY HEI (BOW-TIE) DIST should be subjected to that.

Re: HEI distributor
When the intake manifold is installed on an FE, it's best to install the distributor while the bolts are tightened. This aligns the shaft and housing with the intake and oil pump drive, and helps...

Re: '46 Coupe 59AB Starter
My '41 starter measures 1.527" . I held a caliper set at 1.457" against the commutator end and it sure looks like it'd still work ok. I'd sure run it...nothing to lose (except maybe needing a push...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
If you have one of those profile checking/transferring tools that is a bunch of hard wires that slide in a flat central sleeve, they are really handy for checking how a piston fits in a cylinder head...

Re: Flathead low intake vacuum
If the vacuum is being checked while cranking (won't start so it's not running) it'll be low for sure, and will drop to zero when holding the throttle open. That won't cause it to not start. A shot...

Re: T5 clutch linkage
The '49 has the external "late model" style fork, correct? Should just be altering the pushrod linkage or using an external hydraulic slave system to make things work. Credit to VanPelt for the...

It adjusts by turning the distributor, just like stock Ford did. Same timing spec as well.

Re: '46 Coupe 59AB Starter
Only generator commutators have the mica cut down between the segments, due to the brushes being carbon and soft. Starter commutators do not require it because the brushes are much harder and wear...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I'm running the ball bearing pumps that Speedway Motors sells and they've been great on both the original '41 engine and now the 8CM for several years and 27,000 miles. Michael at Third Gen may sell...

Re: Oil leak
Silly question, but does it only leak when running? I ask because the pan's pretty ugly and might have a crack at the divider wall at the bottom rear.

Re: '59 Fuel Pump Issue
I'd run fuel straight to the carb and let the old pump do vacuum duty. I'd also send that old pump to Charlie Schwendler in NY and let him fix it. He does fine work. 716-662-9159
