Re: 1962 cruieomatic woes

I had the same problem with my '58 Cruise O Matic, and found that it was about a quart low on fluid [after checking it with the car fully warmed up and idling per the shop manual.] Added a quart of...

Hard Start when hot.

My '58 with a 352 4bbl starts great when cold, but is often hard to start when hot. When cranking, it seems like I have a weak battery, [even though I don't]. The cranking is hesitant, and slow with...

Deck lock down on a retractable

When the roof is in the down [retract position] on my '58 Skyliner, the rear deck lock downs work just fine, but when the roof is up [erect position], the rear deck lid will go down, but the locks...

Re: over heats in Texas

Unclevinny: What radiator did you buy, and did you have any trouble with fan clearance? I'm told that the '58's are unique in that the fan nestles right up to the radiator on the FE's.

Re: over heats in Texas

A quick update on what I've done. I did find an after market shroud, but was cautioned against it as it's made of ABS plastic and can deform or even melt at high under hood temps. In south Texas,...

Re: With or without a thermostat?

54vicky: I've heard that too about the importance of restriction for cooling. I've heard stories of old school racers pulling out the thermostat and installing a washer to get the restriction back....

With or without a thermostat?

Will an engine run cooler without its thermostat? Some say yes because removing the thermostat eliminates any restriction, thus increasing coolant flow through the radiator. Others say it will run...

over heats in Texas

My '58 Skyliner runs cool on even the hottest Texas days as long as I'm moving, but when waiting at a stop light, the temp gauge starts zooming to the right. I've got a 352 FE with a Cruise O Matic...

Re: flooding

I sent the Holley back to Summit, and received a full refund under their warranty program even though I was past the 90 day limit. Way to go Summit. I'll be back as a customer. The Edelbrock is...

Re: flooding

Final report: We added a 1 inch phenolic spacer and a fuel pressure regulator, and still, no improvement. The brand new Holley flooded every time the engine was turned off. Restarting always...

Re: flooding

I'm installing a 1" phenolic spacer and a fuel pressure regulator. I'll report back how it works. Thanks to all for the advice.

Re: flooding

OLe Don: I do have a spacer, and have no problem with vapor lock. Do you, or anyone else have a recommendation for a good brand of regulator. Holly makes one that can be adjusted between 2 and 4...

Re: flooding

Thanks billwill. Do you mean 2 and 1/2 pounds, using a fuel pressure regulator? And will fuel pressure that low effect performance?

flooding

I have a 58 Retractable with a new Holley 4160 carb that tends to flood when restarting the car when warm. It seems the pressure in the mechanical fuel pump is forcing fuel past the needle valve when...

Chrome headlight doors for a '58

Does anyone know where to get a pair of chrome headlight doors for a '58 Fairlane 500 [Skyliner]? Mine are body colored, which are OK, but the chrome set would really dress it up. Thanks

Re: Wagging, loud speedometer

Thanks for all the great advice. We cleaned and lubed the cable, which was needed, but that did not completely solve the problem. We ultimately pulled the speedometer and cleaned the head to remove...

Re: Wagging, loud speedometer

Thanks guys, this is a big help. Darrell: I was able to disconnect the cable at the speedometer housing before anything snapped, so hopefully lubricating the head and replacing the cable will solve...

Wagging, loud speedometer

The speedometer in my '58 Skyliner [332V8 mated to a Cruise-o-Matic] wags violently above 30mph, swinging wildly between zero and ninety, while also making a terrible grinding noise. Is this a cable...

Re: Question? First year FE Engine colour.

Did more research on this, and checked the shop manual for '58 as well. Firstly, the black and white shop manual pics of the Interceptor engine clearly show gloss black valve covers on a much...

Re: Question? First year FE Engine colour.

I think the block is supposed to be Ford blue, the rocker covers gloss black, and the air cleaner colonial white.

Retractable questions

How often should you "exercise" the top mechanism to keep it in good running order? I only drive my Skyliner on dry, sunny days when there is no threat of rain, so the top is always down. I do...

I'm about to replace the fluid in my '58 Cruise-O-Matic. Is Type F the best way to go?

Re: Wiper Vacuum Motor, '58 Fairlane

Quick update. I replaced the fuel pump because of a noisy rocker arm [failing diaphram?]. After reconnecting the vacuum lines, the wipers began to work again. Never thought to trouble shoot the...
