Thanks for your responses. The play of 6” was referenced at the steering wheel.
From center of steering wheel 6” free play counter lock wise and clock wise.
My steering box has the star washer on...

I check filter screen and there were no obstructions. It looks like if it is the accelerator pump diaphragm I will need to disassemble the carburetor to replace it. No short cut - right ?
