I found it. It's not connected at either end. Thanks cpf240 for the comment. It seems the ignitor for the electronic ignition system replaced the red wire in the original harness.

I have never boiled over and never had to add much water after it "finds it level." I am however concerned about the high temperature it reaches when driving longer trips.
