Re: fuel injection after market

Hi Chuck, I have a Megasquirt EFI system running well on my 51 passenger car, using an assortment of junkyard sourced parts. It uses feedback from a wideband O2 sensor to trim the air-fuel ratio to...

Re: Let's start a junkyard fuel injection discussion

I think that would work if you go with some kind of throttle cable. Do you have wideband O2 sensor to help with tuning?

Re: Cam degreeing sanity check

How much of the valve train is installed? Is it possible the valve is not dropping down following the cam profile? If so, push it down manually and you can go past and back it up to your second...

Re: Measurement Needed 51 Vicky

Going out on a limb here, but I think flipping the shackles back to normal may lower it one shackle length, might be ok

Re: Wheel/Tire Fitment 51 Vicky

From the shop manual, stock 49-51 passenger car wheels are 15x5 or 16x4.5 with 0.62" offset. Stock tires are 600x16, 670x15, and 710x15 (wagons). Ken

These are 670x15 on what I believe to be...

Re: 1951 8BA Flathead

Your car looks awesome, I even like the wheels. For engine mods there is a book called Flathead Facts with a lot of good information and dyno testing results. I may have an orphan EAB head if you go...

Engine stand adapter

Is anyone currently supplying the flathead engine stand adapter for the exhaust flange? I have an 8BA. Thanks!

Re: OD relay help

When the governor contacts close at ~30mph you will see ground on the terminal labeled 'TH SW TERMINAL'. Once ground is there (you could ground it yourself), the solenoid terminal will see 6V and the...

Re: Shoe Box OD Transmission

Right, I believe the boss one the 51 side cover is lower and doesnt line up. But side covers interchange easily enough and are not specific to std/OD transmissions

Re: Shoe Box OD Transmission

The side cover is different on the 51 from 49/50, and the mount is in a different spot. But I’m running a 49/50 OD trans in my 51. Just needed to swap the side cover (for clutch mounting), reverse...

Re: Combustion chamber volumes

Thanks! For just general purpose relieving the chamber of the material in cases where there is no valve contact issue, where should it come out from? I suppose it might not matter much though...

Combustion chamber volumes

I had a set of EAB heads milled 0.015 - 0.020" to clean up the gasket surfaces and then painstaking relieved the dome areas to get a minimum clearance of 0.040" with the pistons. The combustion...

Re: Good sounding single muffler

I had a similar experience with Smithys rusting out after a few years. I installed a pair of Brockman mellowtones as replacements probably 10 years ago and they have held up great. I believe I did...

Re: Machine shops in upstate NY

Just picked up some fun stuff from Go Devil Garage in Albany, NY. Al Clarke set me up with a 4" reground crankshaft and 1/8" overbore on this 8BA engine. He also reconditioned the connecting rods,...

Re: Flexible Metal Brake Line

I also like using it. Like Tim, though, I’ve found it can kink when doing a tight radius with the bender. It could just be me or my bender, but I find I can get a better very tight radius with the...

Re: Shoebox Driving with Overdrive

I love the overdrive in my 51. For a little extra engine breaking once the OD is engaged, or extra acceleration if you don’t want to floor it for a kick down, simply downshift into second.

Re: New baby 1953 Merc

Check for seized or partially seized wheel cylinders from sitting. Happened on my 51 Ford car and the pedal effort was surprising. I also recommend replacing the brake rubber hoses. These pinch shut...

Re: 1953 Mercury Monterey problems

If it recovers after the initial hesitation, it may be the accelerator pump diaphragm. Sustained problems under load would be due to inadequate fuel supply (possibly why the electric pump was added)...

Re: the build

Here's what I'm not sure about: the venturi vacuum signal is related to how much air is flowing through the carburetor. If air flow is split between two carburetors, wouldn't the venturi vacuum...

Re: Camshaft ideas?

The Schneider 248 looks like a good option based on what I'm looking for, thanks. Did you get a new core or regrind?

JWL, these are some good points. I have been dissatisfied with a camshaft...

Re: the build

There are two vacuum signals coming from the 94 carb - venturi vacuum related to RPM and manifold vacuum related to load. These are combined through small passages into a common port/vacuum signal...
