Re: 50 Car Steering Idler Arm?

My buddy's '51 had a lot of steering slack. I went over to check it out and found his steering box was moving because the frame section it is mounted to was cracked, as well as the mounting bolts...

Re: Draining tank

Siphon out through the filler tube to get the majority out, then remove the plug to get the rest.

Re: Ebay sales tax in place

Just to add more trivia to the bonfire:

Sales tax laws are written as "Sales and Use Taxes". The tax is imposed on where the person USES the item. Crossing state lines to buy products tax-free...

Re: Cam Degreeing/Checking Important

I still find it hard to believe with all the emphasis on precision (especially in engine building) that a cam could be designed, cast, and machined that doesn't conform to spec in the most elementary...

Re: 50 Mercury Heater Fan Squirrel Cage

I think I have a spare 51 Merc housing, but no wheel. PM me if interested and I'll dig it up.

Re: T5 Shift Problems

Yes, but that is a clutch adjustment, not a transmission adjustment.

Re: T5 Shift Problems

As far as I know, T5 has no adjustable linkage as the shifter is mounted atop the trans and operates the shift rail directly. Never saw any adjustable stuff in there, or anywhere else.

Re: 8BA compression issues

I'd suspect your valves aren't fully closing.

Re: What kind of heads are these - 49 Merc flathead?

8CM are 1951 Mercury heads, and they are installed backwards.

Re: Stromberg 97 carb questions

You probably have a liquid filled pressure gauge. They often give false readings when warm/hot because the liquid inside expands and counteracts the fuel pressure sending the needle to zero. If your...

Re: Modern day cosmoline

I like Fluid Film, it has lanolin, which is basically sheep fat. It's not very thick. It is self-healing, meaning that if it scratches it welds itself back together.

Re: eBay seller

Thanks for sharing. We mostly read about scammers and it leaves the impression that they are the majority and they are not.

Re: Elusive Block Crack?

The symptoms you describe aren't alarming to me, but I understand wanting to get things right/perfect. Unless you're boiling over, losing coolant, or leaving behind clouds of vapor I'd say things are...

Re: 1953 ford flathead v8 postive cable to engine

Technically, it can be connected anywhere there is a big bolt and a clean connection. My '51 Merc has a boss near the front driver's side exhaust port that works well.

Re: 51 Merc Wiring kit

The dash harness from MACs extends into the engine compartment to the lighting junction, ignition, starter, fan blower, regulator and generator. There is little left for a separate engine...

Re: 51 Merc Wiring kit

About 10 years ago, I bought a replacement harness through Macs. It took about 5 weeks to be delivered but it was an exact OEM replacement with correct colors and terminals.

Re: No fuel pressure at normal engine temp

Ditto on the liquid filled gauge problem. If it has a rubber plug you can burp it and/or remove some fluid.

Re: 8BA block concern

Before you get radical with disassembly, pull the center bolts and apply Permatex #2 to the threads. Reinstall to normal torque. Let it set up overnight and test it again.

Do a compression...

Re: overdrive

Agreed. I had the same problem and did the same fix. With a toggle, you have to have a good memory whether it's on or off otherwise you risk the following:

1. Starting off in first OD.
2....

Re: piston stop bolt confusion

Guys,
With all respect to your innovative TDC finding methods, unless you're trying to degree the cam, there's no reason that the stock crank pulley mark isn't close enough to TDC to set initial...

Re: Transmission question from a novice

Hog rings hold your upholstery on the seat frames.
Hogs head is the transmission bellhousing part.

Re: 53 Mercury Intake Guide Seals?

Yeah, but the modern plumbing makes it a controlled vacuum leak. ;)

Re: 53 Mercury Intake Guide Seals?

Besides the potential oil getting sucked into the intake tract, think about the air that can get sucked in, creating an internal vacuum leak.

Re: holding a car until spring

Not to be morbid, but stuff happens. Seller could be the best guy in the world, but if he drops dead in the meantime will his family honor the deal?

Seal the deal, get it in writing.
