For standard wiring, isn't the Starter hooked up directly to the negative terminal of the battery, and the positive terminal of the battery goes straight to ground (i.e. the car frame)?...

That was my thought as well - but after doing some digging, it looks like the only thing "Model A" about the car is the engine block; there are a few good photos of the finished vehicle here...

I had one of those (electric fuel shutoff) that was added by a previous owner and just over a year ago got stuck by the side of the road when the thing failed. No way I'd put one of those in again. ...

yup - pretty much this. Happens EVERY.SINGLE.TIME I drive anywhere; I see it as acting as a bit of a Model A Ambassador, and hopefully instilling some interest in them and potentially creating future...

Have you looked at the insides of the carburetor?
When my car was sitting for an extended period (without running the carburetor dry beforehand), it was not a pretty sight afterwards.
