Pull the pan and have a look. That will tell you if there has been a failure. Burned smell and dark fluid is not a good sign.

It could be a leak on the rear band servo or some other mechanical reason on the low reverse set up. Adjustments and pressure checks should be done per the Turbo Drive instructions but band tools are...
