Failing gas tank sealant
Question: How effective are pencil-style fuel screens when your gas tank sealant is failing and shedding flakes? (see attachment of screen)
Situation: My gas tank was boiled and sealed less than...

Re: lutch Chatter
My "clutch chatter" wasn't the clutch at all. It was a quarter inch of play in the universal joint.
But, I was a good boy and replaced the flywheel, ring gear, clutch, pressure plate, universal...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
Yep, that was it! One pressure plate adjustment bolt was nicking the clutch housing. I ground them all down, and no knock!
Thank you for all the great suggestions. I love this place!

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
Steve at Bert's thinks the pressure plate adjusting bolt might be clipping the clutch housing. Sure enough, there is wear on one of the bolts. (see attached)
I'll grind them all down and try...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
I have the Federal Mogul throw-out bearing. I re-verified that it turns freely without clicks or drag. I also re-verified the pilot bearing.
BTW, the knock sounds like a little tack hammer on a...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
I took some measurements:
1. Flywheel bolt length 0.820
2. Crank shaft end-play: 0.009
3. Old flywheel dowel retainer: 0.042
4. New flywheel dowel retainer: 0.035
5. Flywheel flange to bearing...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
I don't see any evidence of scraping on the flywheel bolts or clutch pad. (see attached)
The ring gear looks to be up against the flywheel stop, and appears free of obstructions.
Do you think...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
I struck the ring gear about 100 times with a four pound hammer and jumbo punch (because of your earlier post from 2015). It never moved from the original measurement of 0.1400" from the edge. That...

Re: Knocking after installing new flywheel
No. I measured them to be 0.75" below the pressure plate surface, and thought that was okay. The clutch petal is adjusted to be 1" of free play before the throw-out bearing contacts the pressure...

Knocking after installing new flywheel
I just installed a new stock flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch. Now I get a clicking sound when depressing the clutch petal. The clicking intensifies to a full knock when I press harder. Once it...

Re: U-joint Play
Strangely, I never heard a peep out of it. I'm just going in to change the clutch, which chattered like heck.

U-joint Play
There is about 1/8 inch play in the four shaft ends of my U-joint. And, the shafts are no longer round. (see attached pic)
I'm thinking it's time to retire. Your thoughts? And don't laugh. :)

I started a whole new thread for reshaping my creased fender because the previous thread was a question of using MAPP gas. After reading the responses, I decided not to use heat. I got the feeling...

Dent and crease removal with MAPP gas?
Can you use MAPP gas to remove a nasty crease in a fender? See attachments.
My fender was bent backwards, which left a deep crease. I wondered if I could use a Berzomatic MAPP gas torch to heat it...

Re: Rear wheel bearing play
I still don't know. I can only guess that the axle cracked a long time ago, but stayed partially connected, and then finally broke in two.
The photo shows a nice clean crack on the right side, and...

Re: Rear wheel bearing play
What are the consequences of not replacing the axle housing? Will it tear up the roller bearing? Tear up the rest of the bearing surface? Lock up the rear wheel?

Re: Rear wheel bearing play
The bottom of the axle housing is bright and shiny. The diameter is 2.070 at all points around the housing.
There are some lines on the top of the axle housing, but they are not grooves. I cannot...
