No way that head gasket was sealing . Please clean and recheck with new gaskets . Take a pic with the gaskets laid on . Water will find its way to the pan . If it was mine i would not tear into it...

One pic looks like the head gasket was leaking . But you shouldnt have oil in the water unless the rings werent gapped properly or are cracked , but you have decebt compression ?

Pull the plugs and check for moisture . Are you sure its steam and not just oil vapor ?
Have you retorqued your heads , usually 3 hot cold cycles .

Or use a beam scale torque wrench for both checking calibration or actual use . If treated properly a beam will rarely need calibration . Or that's what I was taught many moons ago

Then go for it . It does cut the smell . I have an old add on that attaches to the 36-7 air filter , not a PCv but a tube from air filter to oil fill cap .

The small harbor freight dolly and some uprights on the front and back . About $20 total .ihave 6 on them for over 3 yrs and still able to pull them from under the bench , if there's room !

Looks like sheet metal , crack isn't concentric to inner and appears to stop at the thin lip .
