Re: Ford pattern S10 T5 to 8BA?
Definitely get in contract with Gary/Krylon - he has all the parts you need and will ensure that you are headed the right direction. He is one of the best guys on the HAMB - so you'll be in good...

Re: Crank
Yeah, one has to give GM a lot of credit for building a mid-engine production car that is really on the level of some of the super-cars . . . for 1/5 of the price. I've not been in one, but if I...

Re: Anyone else had this issue
You can always use a scrap nut and weld it only the end of the stud if you have an issue trying to pull it. Then you won't have to pull the heads.

Re: My next flathead build?
Best of luck with it . . . looks like some fun! That is one big ole' industrial generator - have never seen one like it. Hopefully you can get the heads off of it without too many swear-words . ....

Re: Spring removal and Columbia installation
Getting the backlash and gear mesh correctly set is really important for the overall noise and life of the gears. Preload on the pinion is important as well - though you're probably not taking the...

Re: Crank
There have been a few manufacturers of 180-degree cranks in flatheads - most notably the Norden folks from back in the day.
Obviously, you needed a special 180-degree cam to go with it. I've...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Take some really fine 3M sandpaper (like 800 or 1000) and gently polish the thrust surfaces of the two rear bearing halves. Make sure you check your thrust dimension before installation of...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
If your distributor (hopefully NOT a Crap-O-Matic) has the longer shaft (down below the gear) then try to use the timing cover with the boss that accepts the lower shaft.
I've only seen this on...

Re: Anyone else had this issue
Whomever supplied the set needs to send you a couple that are the correct size! I only use ARP studs (expensive), but they are really nice parts and they hold torque extremely well. With most...

Re: Relieving 8BA Block
Here is what a typical Harley KR barrel looks like - this is from a 100% race engine. Notice the heavy relief that comes right to the edge of the valve seat. Also, a picture of a KR head and a...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I like the earlier crank/timing gears that have the thrust towards the block - as long as the thrust clearance is correct. Depending on the cam, block, timing cover, and gasket (or no gasket) - the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
You always need to install the rear-main seal (in the block) before you put the crankshaft in. I prefer to use the graphite impregnated ones from BestGasket.
Question, did you wash the block with...

Re: Old brazed repairs on a 21 stud
Me, I'd probably grind down into the brass a bit and see how deep it goes. When there are cracks like that, you can almost be assured they go down into/below the hardened valve seat. The right...

Re: Help with a recent 8ba rebuild
You can do what was mentioned up above - to be sure your timing is correctly set . . . or you can explore other distributor options. Even with the initial timing set correctly, you'll still have an...

Re: Columbia two speed differentials
They are one of the few choices if you want to have an overdrive and not put a bunch of modern gear in an early car. With that said, they are expensive to buy and to get ready to use - but you'll...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Those valves are perfectly fine . . . carry on!
If you have a lathe, take some 800 grit black/carbide sandpaper and polish the stems. Or use a high-speed drill. ;)
Put some good...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Your seat width looks quite wide on the valve that was lapped. Are you doing multi-angle seats - such that you can control the width and placement of the 45 degree seat?
You want the seat further...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I bet that ole' cornhead grease would be just fine in your situation. You don't have much spring pressure, so you'll probably be just fine. I use a special lubrication that is designed for cams...

Another thing to consider is using some big C-Clamps and then slowly disassembling the spring pack - such that only the main leaf is attached to the perches.
This usually takes the vast majority...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
It is best to have an actual gear puller . . . if you use a 3-jaw you'll probably only get it onto the teeth and it is very easy to break them off. Ask me how I know such things! LOL
