Problem is I don't have any old rods or otherwise to melt the babbit out of.

I know that the "no lead" plumbing solder is fairly hard compared to 50-50 or 60-40 solder.

Oil? Use modern 10-30.
Suggest that you tie the pan gasket to the pan with light weight thread, cut it and pull it out when the pan is in place.
Ed suggested gasket sealer on the gasket, I never...

The flywheel is cast iron, so it is easily stripped if the bolt is over tightened.

If installing a Helicoil or similar insert use the pressure plate for an alignment guide when drilling.

The horn power comes right off the cutout, doesn't go through the fuse unless the engine is off.

Swap # 4 plug around w/another plug, drive it around for a while then check the plug that is in #4 and also the plug that was previously in #4.

Yes, if the engine is stopped, if it's still running water can be added slowly. Old school trick, (been there, done that).
