Its the type 3 with the 2 long bolts and a single screw holding the field coils. Its on an august 1928 car. Would a type 4 fit if the rebuild takes a bit?

Whom would you trust going through...

The black on is the same as I have on a Aug 28' Roadster pickup. The round bottom channel makes me think that was is original.

Rule of thumb i have heard from my painting buddies is always sand down to p400-p600 before applying base/sealer. Any more than that the paint will not have much to adhere to.

Sounds to me like your starter is on its way out and needs rebuilt. I had the same trouble on my corvette. New starter... no problems since. I think it has something to do with the brushes on...
