It looks like Ian Simpson from Alberta wins the prize!
We took his suggestion, and pulled the old 5/8" pulley from the alternator, and replaced it with a smaller, 1/2" pulley.
Then we took off...

The views in these photos are from the driver's side. The a/c compressor and pulleys are on the passenger side.
I'm in Austin for the next day, but will try out your suggestions when I get back to...

We have always used a cogged belt on the alternator. We're thinking about getting an old-style V belt to see if that makes any difference.
We've tried adjusting the belt every which way.

Yes, we can turn the pulleys freely by hand when we pull the belts.
There's no drag on the pulleys and hardly any play.
