Re: The absolute 'MINIMUM' cylinder wall thickness....

Brent, You are not going to get an exact answer to your question. I agree with Updraught that liners should be installed. For one thing, they are harder than the original cast iron and will last...

Re: Batteries completely discharging

Installing a battery cutoff switch is a good idea for two reasons: It will eliminate any drain on the battery when the car sits. It is also a safety item in case there is an electrical fire.

Re: Jazz Age '28 Sport Coupe on Hemmings Auction

The car is immaculate. The best place for it is in a climate controlled museum. I would be afraid to drive it around the block.

Re: Florida Drivers

Getting back to the subject at hand, years ago I got hit by a lady who ran a red light. My (modern at the time) car was totaled. Since then I have gotten into the habit of looking both ways even...

Re: Stipe Machine/Specialty Motor Cams

Dodge, If you make cam cores, make them with 5 bearings. That way they will work in the Burtz block. Not that the 3 bearing cams will not work but that the 5 bearing cams take advantage of the 5...

Re: Florida Drivers

Merc, When I first stared reading your story I thought that the project bike would end up being the one that got stolen from you.

My last bike (motorcycle) was a BSA 500 single in a Rickman...

Re: Car Is Shrinking........

Some people have modified their cars to add a few inches to the driver's compartment. I think there is a way to move the seat back but I saw at least one car where the body was modified. An...

Re: Second gear

Now that the subject of lubrication has been brought up, here is my 2 cents: 600W was good 100 years ago. Modern gear lube deposits a coating on the metal parts that wears instead of the metal. ...

Re: Aries Stainless Steel Muffler

ThosD, I think the performance Ares muffler sounds more like what I remember Model A's sounding like when I was a kid, but I am not sure. I don't hear anything like I did when I was a kid. Without...

The bring a seat back to the correct width, cut the seat to 45 degrees. Then cut the bottom of the seat to 60 degrees and the top to 30. As you are cutting, check to make sure the width of the seat...

Re: Aries Stainless Steel Muffler

To bring the discussion back to the subject at hand. I have the Ares performance muffler, not stainless, and am very happy with it. My engine puts out about 80 hp. I have tried headers and an open...

Re: Aries Stainless Steel Muffler

Synchro brought up the subject of the cast iron creeping over time due to stress on it. Cast iron will grow when heated even without any stress on it. If anyone has seen an old wood burning stove...

Re: Sealed beams

The original reflectors were polished and sliver plated. By the time the cars were 25 years old the silver was tarnished and not reflective. New reflectors were expensive. The goto solution at...

Ken Davis makes a kit. Several people in my club have them. It does not seem to slow down the car and only takes a couple horsepower to run them.

Re: engine slows when advance timing

You are thinking camshaft, which would be 180 degrees out. You have to rotate the crankshaft one whole revolution to get the #4 cylinder to fire and the #1 to be where the exhaust valve is closing...

Re: T Bakery Van

McGarrett is correct. Those are oil lamps that were mounted on the side of a Model T before electric lights were available, around 1915. Although this is a later Model T, so they were adopted from...

Re: Recommended Turning Signal Switch

Available at Pep Boys in 1958. Try ebay. The ones at Pep Boys had a wheel that rode on the steering wheel to turn the indicator off after the turn was executed.

Re: engine slows when advance timing

The Model A engine is a very simple beast. Proper operation depends on first principles. These are the proper timing of the spark, the proper timing of the valves, and the rotor pointing to the...

Brent, That sounds like a much better way to fix it than using a tractor.

Katy, As I get older I find that misread things a lot. Thanks for the correction.

Re: engine slows when advance timing

I will second what Al said.
