Re: 1956 Thunderbird brake question

I agree with Jeff, keep it all Ford. The drum/drum master from a Mustang or Fairlane should work well and the mounting spacing is the same, 3.20" or 3.25".

Re: pressure brake light switch

Painless Wiring makes one I've seen people use, it trips at low pressure. The one that came with my distribution block leaked immediately. The one from NAPA started out okay, but quickly took a lot...

Re: Strange "Clanking Noise" at Idle

Do you have a heat riser that is banging around? Some of them IIRC had springs on them that would fall apart over time.

Re: The Hurst Mystery Shifter

I knew a guy that had one in a Falcon, we did the clutch (another story...) and he put the shifter back on... with the levers flipped. The pattern was backwards until he figured it out. They were...

Re: 64 Galaxie front drum brake issue

I started in one shop, another mechanic was doing a drum brake job, he kept the one side intact, went back and forth comparing parts. Pretty funny.

Drum brakes are a lost art, I still do them for...

Re: Key ignition Switch locked up tight

Mobile Parts is the real deal, great guy with parts for our old Fords.

Re: '57 Ford Went Off the Road Killing Driver Highway 74 2 Days Ago

I installed 3-point belts up front in my '59 and I have had to make a couple of hard stops. They worked like any new-car set of belts, kept me from moving forward.

It took a bit of doing, the...

Re: 1957 Country Sedan front brakes

So the brake shoes may have a step worn in them? Probably has an odd-ball set of drums and hubs on it, any idea where they came from?

Re: bumber jack

IIRC, they were behind the front seat. I carry a floor jack in the trunk of my '59. Have yet to need to use it, but others have borrowed it.

Re: 64 Galaxie front drum brake issue

It goes to show you that few mechanics really know drum brakes. I did them in the day where shops turned away disc brake jobs because they knew nothing about them. I recall the place I worked in...

Re: 56 Victoria stock rear drums

This guy is the real deal and local to me, give him a try if you get stuck finding parts.

Re: Gasoline tank for 57 Wagon

Mine was for my avatar picture, bought the sender at the same time. Shipping was a total of $20 and they showed up in separate boxes shipped from different locations. Amazon had it for $172, the...

Re: V8 engine potential issues

I had a real '68 Bullitt Mustang. 390, 5-speed, Detroit Locker 3.89 rear, Kelsey Hayes front disc brakes, reinforced shock towers. It was a brute of a car and I didn't exactly baby it... racked up...

Re: My beloved Mustang V8 67'!

You can almost build a new Mustang out of a parts catalog. Places like Steele Rubber and Carpenter are the best for rubber parts. As far as metal parts, it depends on how far you want to go. I try to...

Re: Gasoline tank for 57 Wagon

If you know the Ford part number, do a search under that. I looked, Rock Auto has nothing for the '57 wagon, but this is where I found my '59 Custom 300 tank for the best price.

Re: Engine miss at 30 MPR

2X on the fuel hose thing. When in doubt, change it out. Get some ethanol-friendly hose and new clamps. Also the fuel filter, avoid the glass or plastic ones that I see too much of.

What carb is...

Re: 64 Galaxie front drum brake issue

I have those on the rear of my Ford, also from RA. Drop them into the drum first to see where they make contact. If the heel and toe touch first, try my wood rasp trick. Mark 1" up both ends of the...

Re: 64 Galaxie front drum brake issue

Some older truck shops may be able to arc them, but arc-able shoes had extra meat on them to allow arcing. I bevel the trailing and leading edges on mine too, but give it a shallower angle and go 1"...

Re: starter or generator

The best way to check a charging system is with it running and using a decent VAT tester. Sun used to make a nice one years ago. I like to check alternator/generator output not at the battery but...

Re: proportion valve with disc brk kit

Most brake problems I see on the forums start with those crappy Corvette "style" masters. I would ditch it and get a '72 or so Mustang 1" master for a disc/drum application, but it does have to fit...

Re: Vlaue of a 390

I had plenty of those in my past, also the 352 which always ran well. If the engine has been sitting inside, it would be worth around $250 as a core.

Re: Key ignition Switch locked up tight

The one in my '59 gets sticky (bought it at NAPA...) and at the 1st sign of it happening, I give the key a coat of Lock Ease and it stays good for a while. Try WD40 shot in along side of the key, let...

Re: 64 Galaxie - raise front seat

I'd use aluminum, since I have a bunch of it and machine tools. Oak would do, just make it somewhat oversize, maybe a 1/2 inch on a side so it would be stronger and spread out the load better, round...

Re: Are Mustangs still collectible?

I'd be into one with a 6 and automatic, they are nice driving cars although down on power. I had a '68 GT fastback Bullitt car for a while, factory 390, 4-speed, Detroit Locker rear, Kelsey Hayes...
