I think he is concerned about being on a trip and the car overheating if the coolant goes low. Additionally, do not know if he is running antifreeze, but if so it can damage paint when it...

Somewhere I have seen where a flexible clear tube/hose is added and run up along the side of the radiater. Same principle of a gas float gauge plugged into the bottom of the carb bowl. Sorry, can...
