Re: Help with a recent 8ba rebuild

Got it, Jim. Thank you and that's what I thought. Maybe you can tell from my post, I don't fool around with the side mount distributors much if at all. LOL!

Re: Help with a recent 8ba rebuild

Just curious, when you guys are recommending to move the rotor one or two teeth, can you explain more what you mean? All of the flathead distributors I've dealt with just have a flat spot for the...

Re: (Best) copper head gasket and offenhauser aluminum heads

Yes, very common and you got to get that out for sure.

Re: Generator and Fan

I guess and I get it, but they seem to look out of place in my opinion.

Re: (Best) copper head gasket and offenhauser aluminum heads

You will need to place them on your heads to confirm the needed size. All aftermarket heads are different, so there isn't one set hole size.

Ronnie suggested using a small ball peen hammer and...

Re: 8BA Bell housing

I do believe the only difference is the cast iron truck one will take a 11" clutch and the stamped steel Mercury can only fit an 10" or smaller.

Re: (Best) copper head gasket and offenhauser aluminum heads

L head,

I'm in the process of doing the same. I'll found the 1/8" shaft stone set from Harbor Freight works well for this job and are very cheap. I was using some carbide bits, but these...

Re: (Best) copper head gasket and offenhauser aluminum heads

Ronnie built my motor and has advised me on many other flathead chores since. He and I spoke about the coolant holes issue with head gaskets. He does and has advised to use copper AND to open up...

Re: Where’s my water going?

The new Edelbrock heads use .750" reach plugs

Re: Where’s my water going?

Then don't do it again. The last thing you want is to snap off a stud/bolt. If it keeps coming up to spec, they are at spec.

Re: KR Wilson engine lifting bracket

Ahh. Interesting. I don't own one, but I've thought that's how it worked. Thanks for setting me straight. I've been on the hunt for one for years. They've all seem to have disappeared.

Re: KR Wilson engine lifting bracket

Yep. I believe you can flip it 180 degrees to have the motor angled either forward or back, right? The offset changes the angel the motor will hang.

Re: Flat head back firing pop. pop over and over

Check the spark plugs. Carbon fouled spark plugs can cause these symptoms. If not the spark plugs, could be valves. Run some SeaFoam in the gas and squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug...

Re: Oil capacity clarification

This. Does your truck have the rear sump 8RT pan with the large clean out plate? If so, find an 8RT dip stick for it.

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

Not a bushing, but a plug or grub screw to block or close that hole off. Without the push rod in place, oil will be forced through that hole. In a stock set-up, the push rod would cause resistance...

Re: Skip Haney

That's really odd. I verified the number I listed was the one on my phone. Maybe there is an issue with the phone service in FL?

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

Did you clock the rear cam bearing to block the pushrod hole in the block? If not, this could be the cause of your lack of oil pressure.

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

May want to check with Joe's Antique. I seem to recall he had a decent stock of US-made Mellings when they were still dependable pumps, but don't quote me on this.

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

I doubt this was the problem, but are you able to check to make sure the oil pump pick up sits up off the floor of the pan?
