Re: New Eaton Spring or re-arch existing
I got new Eaton springs for my 41. Be aware that in 41 there were two front spring lengths - the shorter one like earlier years and the longer one like 42-48. I could not convince Eaton of this...

Re: New clutch - what does "disengaged" mean?
Thanks all. I did some more testing and decided that with the floor panel and carpet back in there was no way it was going to disengage enough to get it in gear -- just not enough throw (I should...

Re: New clutch - what does "disengaged" mean?
Hopefully it's obvious but everything is in its place - all went together very well - and I'm now just looking at it through the inspection window and operating the clutch pedal and turning the...

Re: New clutch - what does "disengaged" mean?
I set the proper 1" free play. It's a clutch from Fort Wayne and had a sticker on one side saying "Flywheel side." I put that against the flywheel, or thought I did. How could I tell if it's...

New clutch - what does "disengaged" mean?
Bear with me - first time replacing a clutch and pressure plate on the 41 (actually on any car, for that matter). When fully disengaged, I can turn the u-joint by hand in any gear, but the PP and...

Re: Steering box color
It's a 41. It was probably all black that year as well but just for fun I decided to leave the cover raw and clear coat it.
Also looking forward to having a proper horn instead of button under...

I had the same problem. The bowl was overflowing into the throat after shutting off the engine, making hot starts very hard after sitting for a while. Could be sticky or non-seating needle valve,...

Steering box color
From factory -- were they raw, black, or maybe black with plain metal covers (the look I'm partial to)? Surely this has been discussed but can't turn up any info.

Rear motor mounts will not come off the frame
What is the deal here? No tool in the box will budge these rear motor/trans mount cups -- it's like they're welded or otherwise fused to the bracket. Are they? I've already half destroyed one. ...

Re: Safety alert!
I had this same problem. The more you squished them together, the more they would conduct. I had current leakage between circuits that I traced to the bundle going through the firewall.

I wasn't aware of the National - thanks for the tip. I used these Tru-Torque F-7 things as a quick fix just recently, but my expectations are low.

Re: 41 springs shackle bushing
I wonder if the torsion helps with sway at all. The old springs are still on the car so I'll document with photos.
I measured the new pin diameter and it is indeed 0.756", so I'll need to sand a...

Re: 41 springs shackle bushing
Interesting design - the torsional resistance acts in concert with the lever shocks for the shock absorption. I'll measure and sand the shell if needed to get the right interference. That bit of...

Re: 41 springs shackle bushing
So it's the inner part that rotates as the spring moves? It does seem to have just a little give. Any tips on how to properly orient the square section when I press the pin into the eye?

41 springs shackle bushing
New springs today!
Are these things supposed to rotate in the eye so that the spring steel is the wearing surface? I can press them in there but they won't be rotating. I would have to...

Re: Conductive rubber?
That would definitely explain what I observed. I think I'll replace the 4 or 5 connectors in the firewall cover and call it good. Nowhere else are they compressed tightly together.

Re: Conductive rubber?
I should add that I have a package of individual rubber bullet connectors (not part of a wiring harness) that are fine -- they have infinite resistance and are perfect insulators. Very strange.
