Re: Conversion to 12 volt system

1.5 ohm for 6v and 3 ohm for 12v. It there is too much voltage to points a ballast resistor may be needed.
Thought thats what I said, if it wasn't its what I meant.

My thoughts were that Mike...

Re: Conversion to 12 volt system

If you're having point trouble then I'd suggest checking the voltage to them, it shouldn't be over 8v. If it is then you have an improper coil which would either need to be replaced with a 1.5 ohm...

Re: Conversion to 12 volt system

As Greg said,
Remove and sand/clean all the battery connections especially the ground at the frame. I like to add an extra ground cable from frame to bell housing/transmission. Also check that the...

Re: Theft of original license plates - is this an issue?

I wonder if tamper resistant fasteners would meet judging standards. [smiley face]

Re: Gears 1930 model A

I agree in part.

I've been flying over 50 years and a lot of it is done operating over-square. [ manifold pressure v rpm] [ also lean of peak]. Doesn't hurt anything when done correctly....

Re: Gears 1930 model A

So, just what is lugging ? I'd like to know, been hearing it my whole life.

Henry says to shift our old monsters from 1-2 at 5-8 and 2-3 at 12-15. So what are the engine speeds while we're doing...

Re: Steering box Wear

How did you try to adjust it ?
There are 4 which need to done in the proper order.

Re: Vehicle vibration

My suggestion was going to be to try and isolate the vibration, to see if it was the engine or driveline. So, you're on the right track with what you're now doing.
If it turns out to be the engine,...

Re: About spark plug gap

Its all about available voltage. The old tractors should be able to handle the wider gap. And I think Ford was still trying to figure things out back then.

A wider gap allows for better/smoother...

Re: Engine wont start.

If you ground a plug wire there won't be a spark. The wire needs to be about 1/4" from the ground.

Start by checking for 6v volts at points open arm and 0v when arm is closed. If that isn't...

Re: Gears 1930 model A

Good info above.
Take your time. These old monsters are not in a hurry to do anything.
As said, shift 1-2 while just moving. 2-3 at about 12-15mph. Nice and slow and feel the shifter slip along....

Re: axle key

Don't tighten that nut as it should be and the hub can be pulled off by hand. Thats why some folks think they can leave that nut loose thinking the key will do all the driving.

Re: axle key

I miss those old 2 stroke Detroits. I thought they were great engines but they didn't like starting in real cold weather without some type of help.

Its surprising the things one sees working on...

Re: Condenser mount

Just had 5 bad ones, I think they had a bad batch. I also think they moved or sold.

Re: Condenser mount

Points or condenser ?

Buy the expensive ones. [ or a NOS]
NAPA may have them in stock or can overnight them. Ford V8 points are the same, I don't recall any change thru the 60s-70s [except for...

Re: Condenser mount

The condenser doesn't care about the system voltage, 6 or 12 is fine.
Just connect the condenser the same polarity as the points. If system polarity is positive ground as original, then points...

LOL. Yep.

Same guy. We got a service call and I went. Super cold morning and a Detroit 71 series wouldn't start. Big surprise huh. I pull up and this clown has the mouth flipped open and is...

Re: axle key

We had to fire a mechanic decades ago for a similar reason. Its not the only reason he got fired, he insisted on changing valve cover gaskets, carburetors, etc. with his air gun. He would pick the...

Re: 1930 Tudor - Rear Parking Light - whats this??

Yep, thats a light switch. The originals are good, the repro's are not. They to get full of oil/grease. Its a pretty basic simple thing.

A wiring diagram would be helpful and should be to be found...

Re: Ignition System Question

My suspicion is that the wide plug probably caused the mis-fires and would not hurt the coil.

It does appear that some fellas have had bad luck with these coils lately. I've had good luck with...

Re: oil lube circuit

Oil is pumped from base into valve chamber. Gravity takes over from there. Oil flowing into drip tray is picked up by the con rod dippers. Simple/ basic.
