Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Wow, Thanks for the vote of confidence Terry. Now I'm grinning ear to ear. I'm thinking of working up some specific tooling for bringing down the tight squish spots as I chase after the still elusive...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Terry, The more I learn about the process I am now involved in, the more I understand the principles you put forth here. At the time I couldn't visualize the piston shape as relates to head shape....

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Interesting stuff Dale, thanks. There were some colorful folks and great minds in the racing scene in those days.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I'm starting to smile again. Thanks Dale, and Denny I never thought for a minute that anything you said was offensive. Heck, the only Barney I recall from the '60s had a last name of Rubble.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks Denny, but is the work I'm doing on the heads above the pistons the relief you are mentioning? It should not take me too long to get everything to .040-.045 and finally put this behind me. If...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Maybe there will be some that don't approve of the use of wood as an indicator of compressed gasket thickness, but I carefully made these to .052 and testing indicates no compressing and I'm sure...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

That's an oddity for sure. Maybe so you could run on kerosene during the depression?

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

As if I needed more drama, I will present something that hasn't been brought up yet. In post 246 I mentioned that all this measuring and clearancing to get to a 40+ state was performed with a used...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Les the machinest told me he took a very small amount off the decks to clean them up. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would angle mill the block without mentioning it to me. Been working on...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Since at this point I was really looking for it, I would agree with your observation. Good part of this is that those EAB heads could very well find a home on one of these other blocks and be in the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Here's a couple of photos of a piston at absolute TDC. The piston's top is chamfered and I don't have the experience to call it. Protruding or not? In the one photo you can see the damaged corner on...

Re: My next flathead build?

That's a great idea with the ball glued on. I tried to do this measurement with some custom bent calipers, but got pretty inconclusive results. And I agree about the rare chance that you would end up...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks so much ! I got them today and I can see there is no way I coulda found anything like that in a hardware store. Another piece of the puzzle, so onward I go!

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Flatjack, not the slightest bit above the deck. I could get a close up of a piston at TDC tomorrow. Most of the heads I have came from the large stash of blocks and parts I bought from a neighbor. He...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks for the kind words all! I've managed to stretch this into a 5 day weekend now, and counting. I did find some tight quench areas on the merc heads, but a couple spots at .030 and some at .035...

Re: Nice forty Ford

That is an extremely nice car. It would need to be treated with the same level of care we see with a fresh high dollar restoration IMHO. Wow.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

WELL...... It appears I got lucky. I cleaned up one of the other EABs enough to test, but found they looked about the same area inside of a test gasket and had a serious rust pit in a bad place. I...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Best Gasket website says their big bore copper gasket measures .080 and compressed thickness is .052. Are my concerns valid, or am I just obsessing needlessly? Also when it was suggested that the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks Mart. I will check the center this morning, but do we not find the entire head to be a problem area so far? If we are looking for .040 we need .015 added. An .070 copper clad gasket would add...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Well this is not at all what I expected to find. This is with a used head gasket that measures .062 everywhere on it. I took one of the new Best composition headgaskets and it it unused, uncompressed...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Ok perfect you guys. So, you do one cylinder at a time? I think I'll get that party started in the morning. When my wife gets home from work I'll ask if we have any clay for the grandkids in her toy...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I don't have a profile gauge. Does foil or clay work on pistons? And this test is done with a used head gasket and light torque?

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

That's kinda scary, Terry. With the extra compression will I need to run premium gass?

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks, and thanks again to Pete. It's amazing what clarity these phone cameras have when taken to a full page. While I have insisted I'm not a hot rodder, I have been advised by far too many experts...
