This is no big deal...all the 3 speed Model A transmissions will do this.
When stopped and in neutral, just grab shifter stalk towards the bottom, pull straight up and the stalk will pop up; then...

please don't overthink this...yes, it works, just pull up on the gearshift lever and when it pops, push it forward, toward the dash, out of the way.
Really, that's all there is to it, no big deal,...
