Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Those valves are perfectly fine . . . carry on!
If you have a lathe, take some 800 grit black/carbide sandpaper and polish the stems. Or use a high-speed drill. ;)
Put some good...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Your seat width looks quite wide on the valve that was lapped. Are you doing multi-angle seats - such that you can control the width and placement of the 45 degree seat?
You want the seat further...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I bet that ole' cornhead grease would be just fine in your situation. You don't have much spring pressure, so you'll probably be just fine. I use a special lubrication that is designed for cams...

Re: Removing perch bolt for repair
Another thing to consider is using some big C-Clamps and then slowly disassembling the spring pack - such that only the main leaf is attached to the perches.
This usually takes the vast majority...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
It is best to have an actual gear puller . . . if you use a 3-jaw you'll probably only get it onto the teeth and it is very easy to break them off. Ask me how I know such things! LOL

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Since you're putting a new cam in the engine, you should consider having the bottoms of the lifters resurfaced as well. Pete on here can do that for you - I highly recommend having it done (is not...

Re: Compression and flow
The problem with a definitive answer is that the only one that is accurate is "it depends".
Having higher compression is a big benefit in a flathead for normal off-the-line performance, cruising a...

We're on the same page . . . and I hope my recommendations of how to effectively modify a V8 style rear for width, added strength and the ability to use the brakes you have works for you.

Re: Isky 404A cam - Harley Davidson grind?
I've checked the double springs against the Isky 185-G springs and the 185-G springs are actually better. I have no idea as to why Ed created the dual-spring package . . . other than to claim it was...

At least you can now sleep at night! Isn't it funny how we can start worrying about something like this . . . and it just plagues our mind until we go check it out and either see there is no problem...

Happy Belated Birthday Ron! My Mom just turned 91 on the first . . . and like you, she is still a vibrant and wonderful person. Keep on moving . . . and get to 92!

Re: 8BA Flathead Ford Crankshaft Pulley Install
That big ole' bolt will take a lot more torque than 60 lbs - though the washer that goes with it may deflect. I would not worry about it in the least. If you're nervous, check it with a torque...

Re: Magneto and belts
Yeah, when running a locked-out mag (all advance in), I will pump some fuel into the motor, leave the mag switch OFF, hit the starter and let it spin a couple times - then turn the mag on. This is...

Re: Magneto and belts
I have a few vintage Scintilla magnetos - they were the company long before Vertex. Every one of them has advance plates in the bottom.
The advance mechanism is 100% mechanical - it only...

Re: 6V vs 12V condenser
You really can't checkout if a condenser is working with an Ohm meter. You have to have a special device that charges it and checks the flyback.
A properly setup crab distributor is FAR easier to...
