Vacuum advance is needed regardless of whether you have points or an electronic conversion.

No doubt and I wasn't trying to start a p*ssing contest. I was only suggesting that the Edsel carb would probably work OK, possibly with fiddling, not knowing how concerned with originality the OP is...

Try this website. They have a pretty good explanation of how your carb/distributor combination work together, and the purpose of the spark control valve. Ignore references to V8s; the Loadomatic...
