I believe the commercial pencil filters have the solid area between the shutoff and the screen area so rust/flakes have a small area to collect and not block the screen.

My alternate method - Use a cheap plastic/Rubbermaid/equivalent tub/storage tub/tote from Walmart, turn off the gas shutoff, drain the float bowl which drains the gas line from the sediment bowl,...
