Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

Quick update. The optima was a great upgrade. I used the car to run multiple errands today involving roughly 5 stops of a half an hour or so. The slow cranking hot has been resolved by the battery...

Re: 1950 Mercury add factory OD

I see your signature shows your merc is a woodie. Station wagons came with 4.55 gears if I remember correctly. If you have a hard time locating all of the parts for an OD transmission, see if you can...

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

I'll be purchasing a red optima today. I guess I'll have a nice optima for my tractor once I do upgrade the merc to 12v. Ill see what the battery does and move onto the starter from there. Thanks...

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

This is what oreillys had available when I bought it about 2 years ago or so.

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

I have replaced all of the cables to the starter, battery and motor. Only the positive ground to the block is 00. All others are what shoebox central sent me. I also upgraded to "military style...

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc

I suspected the coil also. I needed one for my tractor so I pulled the 2 year old coil off the merc and it works fine on the tractor. I bought a brand new one for the merc instead of pulling one back...

Hot Start 1950 Merc

I've done some research on this topic but want a little more feedback or reassurance I'm heading the correct direction.

1950 Merc fires up cold like its fuel injected, half a crank and its...

Re: 6v to 12v

This is the 6V kit I have https://shoebox-central.com/6-volt-modern-universal-wiring-harness

I decided to go with this kit with an alternator instead of going with the powergen unit for...

Re: 6v to 12v

The car will be wired with the 6v kit, then I'll be going to 12v.

38 coupe, that's what I'm trying to get away from doing. Not enough time in the day. A kit will save me a lit of time. My 6V is...

Re: Merc OD

Good to know, thanks! I'll be going to 12v soon and when I do that I may install a small tach.

Re: Merc OD

Quick update. I have ordered a new kickdown switch, I'm waiting for it to come in along with a couple of other things. I topped off the tank and set out to venture as far away from home as I've been...

Re: 6v to 12v

What I said must have been misleading, the 6v kit I have no issues with. I was just stating that I have it. My questions are more based around a kit for converting to 12 volt.

Re: Jackson MI swap meet

If my wife and I don't have anything going on that day we may take a trip over there and check this out. We're about an hour away. Is there usually anyone selling cars and trucks there?

6v to 12v

1950 merc mostly original. 3 on the tree with OD.
Most of the wiring in the car is shot, I've fixed/patched/repaired but I'm beyond that point now. I recently bought a 6V rebel wiring kit to redo...

Re: adding electric fuel pump

I went with one of the fuel pumps linked above, it didn't even run long enough to build pressure in my fuel system before it died.
When I bought my car it had a fuel pump just like this one...

Re: Merc OD

I'll buy 2 and play with one of them. My current switch is split at the bottom, I'm not going to mess with it.

It's been a productive day. Not only does the OD work I replaced the starter wire,...

Re: Merc OD

Update: IT WORKS! I was correct in me being the problem with the manual switch installed. At low speeds going off the sound of the exhaust it isn't very obvious. At 50+ mph it's undeniable.

It's...

Re: Merc OD

It's been a busy week for me. I haven't messed with the car at all. It's going to be decent weather this weekend, I'm going to take it out and see if maybe the problem was me before I dig into it...

Re: Merc OD

I hooked a wire from the battery, through a 30 amp fuse directly to the solenoid and no luck with the OD kicking in. I can clearly hear the solenoid moving but there is no engagement.

Re: Merc OD

You're absolutely right about it being the rail switch, I'm not sure how I overlooked that.
Any idea what the rail switch should ohm?
I'm not seeing any smoking gun on why my system isn't...

Re: Merc OD

In post 22/23 I have an additional "box" (lack of knowing what it actually is) between the rail switch and the governor. It's not a wire leading directly from the rail switch/actuator to the...

Re: Merc OD

What would be the proper way to bypass the kickdown until I get another one? This is the wiring diagram and I have dug up.

Re: Merc OD

Temperance MI, just north of toledo.

Duplicating the test I'm seeing as high as 12 ohms while spinning my drill max rpm. An open circuit when not spinning

I hooked it up to a drill like I read of people doing. Everything moves great
