Ruidoso MAFCA meet

I will be leaving Wilkesboro on Wednesday, the 19th, to drive my Model A to Ruidoso. I plan to do about 400 miles each day for 4 days, a total of about 1,600 miles. I have hotel reservations for...

Re: A A transmission HELP!

There are two ways to do a clutch job. One is to pull the rear end and then pull the bell housing with the transmission. The second way is to pull the engine. Getting at it from the rear may be...

Bob, You will love your new Aries muffler assembly. Did you get the performance model? Some members have reported problems with the stainless steel one.

Re: Zenith jet drill bits.

The drill index will have the letter size or number size of the drill bits, but don't just take that as fact. Measure the shank diameter with a micrometer.

If you solder up and drill out the...

Re: ‘31 YOM Illinois plates with Chicago medallion

The first measurement on horsepower in the very early days of auto manufacturing was based on the displacement, not what the engine put out on a brake. This continued in England for long time. That...

Re: moved

Cliff, You could bring then to your club meeting or to the meet in Asheville or the one in Ruidoso. Or place an ad in one or both of the Model A magazines. I am sure someone will want those.

Re: A A transmission HELP!

Regarding the clutch. The throw out bearing has a spring that could be pulling the clutch lever down. Try moving it with a wrench (pipe wrench?) to see if it gets harder to turn when the clutch is...

Re: Tools/supplies needed while traveling

So, one thing to do is to always go on tours with Paul, and drive in front of him so that he can repair your car when it breaks.

Re: Door alignment problem on 29 CCPU

Without the factory jigs it is difficult to get things aligned. However it will help to bolt it to the frame. It may be different for a pickup, but for my Fordor I was able to align the hood and...

Re: Tools/supplies needed while traveling

Even though your car is in excellent shape, it is prudent to carry a set of tools and spare parts that have a reputation for failing. One thing that comes to mind is the clutch disengagement lever,...

Re: Model A serial number verification

I recently lifted the body to remove the front fenders for painting. I took a photo of the serial number on the frame, which matches my registration and the original engine sitting in my basement. ...

Re: Enclosed car trailer for Model A

Measure the total length of your car and add about 5 feet. It is handy to have some extra space in front for tools, parts, and supplies.

The friends of mine who bought enclosed trailers have...

Re: Stuck starter

People have reported fixing a stuck starter by taking the switch off, taking the three bolts off, and turning the starter with a strap wrench. Disconnect the battery first.

To convert the...

Re: Next step?....

Ford initially had round Model A pistons but slots were cut in the skirts so that the expansion could take place without the pistons binding up in the bores and scuffing. If I remember correctly,...

Re: OT: 1930's Grand Prix

It is really too bad that all that technology and innovation (and money) was not used to help the German people and not to start a war and kill innocent people. There are lessons to be learned that...

Re: Next step?....

Craig, Modern pistons are not round. The expansion of the aluminum has to have some place to go. So the pistons are ground so that the fore and aft diameter is less than the side to side diameter...

Re: Rear Diff Plug HELP

Yeah, thats the plug I have. I bought a 3/8 breaker bar for it that just fits my plug.

Your idea of welding in a square shank is excellent.

Love, love, love the Smoky Mountains. You are so...

Re: Front brake shoes grab

Keith, Since you have all new parts, the assumption is that there is no grease anywhere. If some grease was introduced when you assembled the brakes then it has to be removed.

As Bob and I have...

Re: Tight Fit for Inner Wheel Bearing

There are Loctite compounds that are designed for mounting bearings. These have the advantage that they loosen when heated, so that removing the bearing is possible. The shaft and bearing have to...

Re: Rear Diff Plug HELP

If you chase the treads as Bruce suggested in Post #6, flush the case with a solvent like kerosene and, in any case, add a magnetic plug at the bottom as Blockhead recommended in Post #8.

Re: Front brake shoes grab

The tracks are key to centering the shoes. If they are worn then you will have to weld them up and file them to get the shoes centered. This can be tricky because the tolerance on the shoe...

Re: Tight Fit for Inner Wheel Bearing

If you are not worried about saving the old bearing, you could weld something on to it so that you could use a standard puller. Like a big washer or collar.

Re: Rear Diff Plug HELP

Bruce, I will second the use of Teflon tape. Not only will it seal but it will prevent the plug from freezing in the housing.

Re: Rear Diff Plug HELP

Try the vice grip first. I would avoid drilling the plug because of introducing chips into the housing. If the vice grips fail, I would grind off what is left and then weld a nut onto the plug, as...
