Re: Model A engine in a 32 Model B
It sounds more likely the radiator is the problem
Usually when there are cracks you will have water in the oil or worst water in a cylinder
Just an observation

Re: rod nuts...why the odd size?
simple
When the Model A easy designed and built the SAE had not standardized on fasteners.
John
PS, I would replace them with modern nuts of proper grade.

Re: Rear main options
If you are that concerned get your hands on one of Terry Burtzs' motors.
Just eliminate the worry.

Re: 1931 model a engine
Hmmm
Pictures are not that clear however the 4th cylinder is showing much leakage thru gasket and there is a mark between 3 and 4
I hope it is not a crack or burnt groove

Re: "New Engine" Balancing"
To add one more point
The inline 4 cylinder engine suffers from the fact that the offset piston acceleration between top and bottom of stroke causes harmonics that cannot be dampened without adding...

Re: "New Engine" Balancing"
Kurt
The subject of “balancing” the engine is another misunderstood science
I would suggest doing a little research on the ISO balancing standards
Once you determine the actual operating...

Re: cam lube
Depends on what motor you are putting together.
Cam material is the issue, better safe than sorry, moly anti seize

Re: Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head
So this is my take on the subject
Both bolts and studs do the same job but the wear is very different on the threads in the block
Studs especially good quality ones will resist stretching and keep...

Re: KRW Combination Machine
Ray
The Babbitt talent is already on the decline unfortunately
Inserting the motor is already done with good success and now the Burtz motor is available
But you do have a point as new people...

Re: Head stud to block
One last point to be concerned with here
Be careful to not drill too deeply
The stud boss is fairly thin in the bottom and you do not want to penetrate into the water jacket

Re: Stipe Machine/Specialty Motor Cams
The blanks are not hard to make
The drive gear is a little tricky but not impossible
The biggest challenge is getting the basic profiles for the lobes done, heat treated and final finish.

Re: valve recession
Typically having a valve low will not cause too much trouble other than limiting port flow
It should be noted that removing material from the seat will never raise the valve up
Replacing seats is...

Re: Oil Pump Shaft
hmmm,
This has been my concern with modified V8 pumps for the model A.
The housing was never made for this and he castings too thin.
I made a few billet alum adaptors for V8 pumps that will never...

Considering the pump shafts are .498 diameter finding a 5/8 shaft will be difficult to assemble

Re: V8 Clutch in Model A: Something is not right
From the first picture it looks like the pressure plate is compressed too far, disk is too thick. It is positioning the arms too deep into the PP assembly, no room to actuate and release the clutch....

Re: Electric Model A's
More than likely his wife could drive a stick and he was jealous
Yes learning to drive one should be a requirement for license
It will educate the drivers or prevent those who shouldn’t
