Since I was primarily interested in vehicles made after 1953, I stuck to perusing Ford automobile and Ford truck brochures. You nailed it.

One of these must be used to seal the valve, as a gasket. Instead of a shim, think of it as a gasket.

I purchased a set that included a variety of sizes. Can the valve be installed and operated without any additional shims?
