Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I typically bolt the gear onto the cam before installing the cam, then line up the dots on the gears when dropping in the crank. Can you see the offset in the bolt holes of the cam? Maybe make a...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

According to the 1953 Ford Truck Shop Manual (page 53) "After the cover is installed, the pump shaft shall rotate freely and have an end play of 0.002 to 0.0045 inch".

Re: Ford intake with S

It is the low generator mount 37 and later type intake. I didn't take a picture from the side and don't have the intake at home.

Re: 1937 Ford Coupe - Fuel sending unit

All 36-55 Ford sending units are the same, with different arms crimped on. You can carefully remove the arm and swap a different one (or make a new one if necessary) on if the sender is working...

Ford intake with S

I bought a 37-39 style intake at a swap meet earlier this year. It looks typical of Ford's factory intake except it has a large S in a circle on top of the runner in front of the carb area. The only...

Re: Timing advance plate - Crab Distributor

According to the big spreadsheet of compression ratios your engine is over 9:1, and if no relief over 9.5:1. Definitely expect it to be more sensitive to spark timing than the stockers I work with.

Re: Timing advance plate - Crab Distributor

Thanks for the report and the pictures. I find I usually have good results with the advance half way between the middle and the end of the scale, and run down the vacuum brake a few turns if needed...

Re: Timing advance plate - Crab Distributor

These days I typically advance a front mount distributor several notches more than factory spec and find the engine runs better. I suspect that is due to a bit of wear in both the front slot of the...

Re: Aluminum alloy model T wheels

That speedster has factory wood spoke wheels. The steering wheel has an aluminum "spider" (the hub and spokes)....

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thank you for sharing all your trials and tribulations on this engine, this is a fun thread to follow.

Maybe put a tight fitting wood dowel in the front valley tube so you can get a good grip on...

Re: Timing advance plate - Crab Distributor

Glenn, please post the results of testing with your timing light, I'm curious how the stack up of tolerances and 80 years of wear have affected the distributor timing mark.

Re: engine stumbles under load

I would start by putting the good distributor back in. Measure the resistance of the new coil and add a ballast resistor if needed to get the total resistance where it needs to be. Condenser and...

Re: Overheating 1946 V8

In addition to all the above good advice we need to ask how hot is your car getting? Some people get concerned when the factory temperature gauge goes past the half way mark. The 3/4 mark is 180 F, a...

Re: Banjo rear end hub, axle bearings and seals

I have heard horror stories about inferior replacement wheel bearings. Quite a few years ago now (15, 20?) C&G advertised new caged wheel bearings with hardened cages. I purchased a pair after...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

This is fun to follow. Please post pictures of a head in the process of being corrected with your piston doming tool.

Also, personal preference, (please ignore if you have different inclination)...

Re: My next flathead build?

That looks conclusively like "C59A". When I get some time I need to update the engine ID information.
Thanks for all the information and pictures.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Things are looking good. Good news on the Mercury heads working for you. That is exactly the same method I used with foil balls. Clearanceing the heads looks like what my friend did on his Mercury...

Please note this isn't posted in the classified section, and is a hot rod instead of the flathead topics best suited for the Ford Barn. Recommend moving this advertisement to a different forum.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I did one bank (four cylinders) at one time. Had a piece of scratch paper (maybe cardboard?) to make notes on, and measured each ball after spinning the crank a couple times with a dial caliper. The...

Re: My next flathead build?

I'm really curious what the mark looks like on the crusty engine after more cleaning. I suspect you are right, it is "C59A", but have learned not to speculate too much about an engine block before...

Re: My next flathead build?

I suspect that is "C99A" on the block. We have a nice thread here on the Ford Barn on identifying engines, it is more informative and more accurate than any youtube video I have seen.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I used four balls of tin foil stuck to each piston (center, far left, far right, bottom, didn't worry about the top with the clearance in the factory head) with a dab of grease, bolted the heads down...

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

Last week I helped swap the banjo section, ring & pinion, on a 40 pickup axle. The pins holding the coupler to the driveshaft and pinion had snapped due to worn out splines (the pins were taking the...
