Re: Carb leak

Probably a leaky valve. To confirm, disconnect the fuel line at the carb and put the end into an empty water bottle overnight. A collected quantity of 1 or 2 ounces over 24 hours is enough for a...

Re: Transmission noise - attempt two failed to solve the problem.

Since you are dropping the rear axle might consider pulling the trans and doing a thorough inspection and rebuild. As Wick suggested, a damaged front bearing would fit the presentation and would be...

Re: Gear Grind After Clutch Adjustment

Yes, low trans oil will cause gear clash because there is no fluid drag on the gears. Another possibility is a rough pilot bearing. Since the grinding started immediately after the free play...

Re: Henry and Edsel

Another potential cause of Edsel's cancer was attribited to drinking unpasteurized milk from the family farm. The Willow Run plant was a huge accomplishment which contributed significantly to the...

Re: Sticking valves?

Had the same presentation on my 31 some years ago. Raised the rpm and injected Marvel Mystery Oil directly into the carb intake and the problem was resolved. In my case I think the problem was...

Re: Synchronized Transmission

Short shift (shift early) from first to second, double clutch second to third. The big secret down shifting from third to second is to clutch to neutral, let out the clutch, bump up the rpm, and...

Re: Motor shuts down

Had a similar problem on a boat. Turned out to be a bad wire connection that lost continuity when the connection warmed up. Try shaking all the connections while the engine is running. Good Luck.

Re: Clutch freeplay

Free play is not measured between the fingers and throw out bearing. When depressing the clutch pedal the distance from "full up" to sensing contact between the throw out bearing and clutch fingers...

Re: 6 blade fan

Had a six blade plastic fan which might have been too much mass for the water pump and resulted in premature bearing failure and pump shaft damage. Maybe it was just a bad fan or pump. Put on a new...

Re: Painting/masking question

All true. The paint must be "ripe" - still pliable and not stone dry. If totally dry the result is often a ragged edge rather than a nice cut. Best to pull the tape at 180 degrees to ensure you...

Re: knock during hard acceleration

Sounds like you are describing "pinging" rather than "Knocking". Common causes for pinging is usually timing over advanced for the compression ratio/octane rating/fuel mixture (too lean)/engine...

Re: 1931 Sitting for 5 years won't start

After setting awhile, stuck valves are a common problem. Might do a compression check to confirm valves are free. With spark it should at least cough a few times. Please share the fix.

Re: dies at stops

Had the same problem. Turned out to be a leaky vacuum fitting on the intake manifold for the vacuum wipers. Changed out the fitting and life was good.

Re: Fan Belt replacement

A good "cogged" belt readily available from your local parts store is a BX40. If it is too small try a BX41 or BX42. This belt works especially well on the smaller pulley of an alternator. Good...

Re: 272 to 312 Swap?

On a 59 Galaxie, standard trans, I pulled the 292 and dropped in a 57 Merc 312. It was a perfect fit with no parts changes needed. The performance increase was significant.
